4 Best Toy Wagons for Babies & Toddlers

March 26, 2020

I’ve been working at Radio Flyer for over a decade, so it's no surprise that I love little red wagons. I’ve always been charmed by our baby’s first wagon options. Long before I had kids, I collected many of these pint-sized versions of the iconic vehicle. They are the perfect decor pieces—at both work and home. I always knew they were technically toys, but I was thinking that they are just so dang cute!

Now I get to enjoy the classic look all day long when I’m home with my toddlers. My 2.5 year old twins spend hours loading up their toy wagons and pulling their "things," their "friends" and their "gear" from room to room. I love seeing one of my favorite things come to life when used for its real purpose: a treasured toy.

Our toy wagons are extra important right now since they fit so well inside. With bad weather and COVID-19 safety measures, our family—like so many others—has been cooped up in our apartment for days. All Radio Flyer toy wagons are a great size to play with indoors (and out when the weather allows). We’ve played with quite a few toys wagons over the past 2.5 years. Here are my 4 favorites.

1. Radio Flyer My 1st Wagon®

The Radio Flyer My 1st Wagon® is the hottest wagon in our house right now. It started as adorable baby toy storage, and now it sparks daily adventures. It is the perfect size for a toddler. My boys easily maneuver it around the house. We started with only one and had to add a second after an intense fight. Sometimes we play very specific, structured games with the wagons. They have been Santa’s sleigh delivering toys, package delivery trucks, and rides for favorite stuffed animals. Other times, I have no idea what is going on as my boys chatter away while pulling their little red wagons. Either way, they build motor skills, engage in imaginative play, and have a TON of fun every time.

2. Classic Walker Wagon

The Classic Walker Wagon is the ideal vehicle to help beginning walkers. The solid wood construction makes it heavy, but not too heavy for little ones to push — perfect to help support first steps. There is even a "resist-push" feature which keeps the wheels from turning too fast. The slower pace helps new walkers as they learn control and gain balance. We spent whole days helping our babies push it from one side of our living room to the other as they learned to walk. The Walker Wagon is also beautifully designed. Now that my boys are walking (and running, and jumping, and climbing… yikes!) this wagon is the perfect book bin. The classic style looks great—even in the middle of our living room!

3. My 1st 2-in-1 Wagon®

The My 1st 2-in-1 Wagon is also a great fit for beginning walkers. This is the perfect option for heading outside. The lighter weight makes it super easy to move around. Plus, this wagon converts from walker to wagon. All you need to do is flip a small lever and the handle pops-out. So once your child is walking, they can pull this wagon around on endless adventures. And, like our other toy wagons, it also functions as beautiful toy storage (as long as your kids aren’t claiming it as their own!).

4. Personalized Gift Wagon (with a Little Red Toy Wagon)

These wagons are all great baby gifts. I’ve gifted each of them, always with a very excited reaction, especially at showers. I love the option to send a personalized gift wagon when I can’t visit a new baby right away or make it to a shower. The toy wagon base holds essential baby items: a plush bear, a toy duck and your blanket (choose blue or yellow). There is even an optional personalized nameplate. My favorite part is that it arrives assembled and wrapped, ready for gifting. I can either ship it directly to the excited family, or unpack and head straight to a baby shower.

All of these toy wagons are great options for different stages of baby and toddlerhood. I have always loved to find new ways to use them. And it is even more fun to see different ways my children play with their toy wagons. What adventures will your toy wagon inspire?
