Teaching your little one to ride a bike is one of the most exciting parts of watching your child grow up. Keep reading for our guide on the best beginner bikes for toddlers so you and your little one can be confident and excited for this next step in play development!

What age is best to start a toddler on a bike?

As your little one grows, you might be wondering what age kids ride bikes? The answer will change family to family, but it’s never too early to start building confidence and balance.

Balance bikes and tricycles are great places to start (see below to read about the difference between toddler bikes). These rides isolate key skills to bike riding so that your little one can learn them independently. Trikes teach pedaling, and, as the name implies, balance bikes teach balance. Our balance bikes are recommended for kids 18 months to 5 years, while some of our tricycles, like the Big Red Classic Tricycle, have an age range of 2-5 years.

Once your little ones are a little older, families can introduce a training wheel bike around 3 to 7 years old. Be sure to check the recommended age for all bikes and riding toys.

What are the different types of toddler bikes?

Tricycle: A tricycle is a beginner bike with three wheels. They are stable and help kids develop strength and coordination to steer and pedal with a stable and durable base.

Balance Bike: A balance bike is a pedal-less bike that helps kids focus and build balance. Kids can kick and glide on their balance bike while developing gross motor and spatial skills like balance, motion, and coordination.

Training Wheel Bike: A training wheel bike is a classic bike with pedals and two small rear wheels for a  total of four wheels on the bike. The training wheels are typically removable, like on our Classic 12" Cruiser™.
