Little Red Story Winner: Chemo Fun

It’s not often you see the words “chemo” and  “fun” together … but Christina Anderson, who lives in Aurora, Colorado, shared with us what it means for her family.

Christina told us about her 5-year-old son Nate, who was diagnosed with leukemia as the family was en route from Oahu to a new home in Germany last summer.  They had stopped in Colorado to visit with family for the summer, but never left after a trip to urgent care with Nate led to his devastating diagnosis of leukemia within 24 hours.

Nate sometimes has to go to the Children’s Hospital three days a week for treatment, and even looks forward to it, as the active boy passes time on a beloved Radio Flyer ride-on—cruising down hallways, circling the nurse’s station and playing chicken with his oncologist.  She writes, “When Nate is riding he is in the zone of enjoying being a kid and it lets the leukemia and stress of chemo melt away.”

In addition to his Radio Flyer, Nate loves Legos and plays with them for hours.  He enjoys watching planes and wants to be a fighter pilot when he grows up, and take after his father who is in the Air Force.

We received a lot of beautiful photos and stories in December for the Radio Flyer Little Red Stories contest, but the Radio Flyer story that stood above the rest came from Christina.  As a monthly winner, Christina receives a $500 gift card to and will also be eligible to win the $10,000 grand prize.

She said she is donating half of her prize to Brent’s Place, and the other half to Nate’s school, Peace With Christ, which ensures he has a clean environment and understands how to deal with the side effects from his treatment.

We thank Christina for sharing her story, and hope it inspires others!  What’s your Little Red Story?
